VELUX Roof Window Maintenance & Cleaning Guide

Keeping Your VELUX Windows in Top Condition

VELUX roof windows are designed to last for decades, but like any product exposed to the weather, they benefit from regular cleaning and basic maintenance. This guide explains how to care for your window, reduce condensation and keep everything operating smoothly.

These simple steps can extend the life of your window and maintain its energy efficiency.

Cleaning the Inside of the Window

Regular internal cleaning helps keep the glass clear and maintains the appearance of the frame.

  • Use mild, non-abrasive cleaning products.
  • Wipe the glazing with a soft cloth to avoid scratches.
  • Clean the frame with warm water and a mild detergent.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or scouring pads.

For windows with a white painted finish, avoid products containing ammonia or strong solvents.

Cleaning the External Pane

VELUX roof windows can rotate 180° to make exterior cleaning easy and safe from inside the room.

  • Open the window fully, then rotate and lock the sash in the cleaning position.
  • Clean the outer pane using water and a mild glass cleaner.
  • Rinse to remove residue.

Never climb onto the roof to access the window — the centre-pivot design is made for safe internal cleaning.

Replacing the Air Filter

All VELUX roof windows include a built-in air filter to help keep dust, insects and debris out of your home. Over time, the filter can become clogged.

  • Open the ventilation flap.
  • Remove the filter from the holder.
  • Vacuum or wash the filter using mild soap and warm water.
  • Replace once fully dry.

Filters typically need cleaning once or twice a year depending on environment.

Checking for Condensation

Condensation on the inside of a VELUX window is usually caused by high humidity in the room, not a fault with the window.

  • Use the ventilation flap regularly.
  • Open the window briefly to refresh the air.
  • Ensure extractor fans work effectively in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Consider blinds or awnings to reduce temperature variation.

Condensation *between* the glazing panes can indicate a failed unit — a sign the window may need replacing. See our VELUX Installation Costs Guide for typical upgrade options.

Maintaining Smooth Operation

VELUX roof windows have durable hinges and mechanisms designed for long-term reliability. Light maintenance helps keep them operating smoothly:

  • Lubricate hinges annually using a silicone-based lubricant.
  • Check the locking mechanism for debris or stiffness.
  • Ensure screws and brackets are tightened if needed.

Checking Flashings & External Seals

External flashings prevent water from entering the roof around the window. Over time, weather exposure can affect their performance.

  • Inspect tiles or slates around the window for movement.
  • Check seals for visible wear.
  • Remove moss or debris that may affect drainage.

If you suspect flashing issues, see our VELUX Flashing & Installation Guide.

When to Consider Repainting or Refurbishing

White painted and pine finishes can fade or wear over extended periods. VELUX windows can be lightly sanded and refinished when necessary.

  • Sand gently to remove worn or discoloured areas.
  • Apply a suitable VELUX-approved finish.
  • Avoid over-sanding edges or joints.

Modern white-painted frames are more durable and moisture-resistant than older timber-only versions.

Signs Your Window May Need Replacing

  • Condensation between panes
  • Water ingress around the frame
  • Poor insulation or drafts
  • Stiff or failing hinges
  • Warped or discoloured frames
