VELUX Flashing & Installation Guide

What Is VELUX Flashing and Why Is It Important?

VELUX flashing kits create a weather-tight seal between your roof window and the roofing material. Choosing the correct flashing is just as important as choosing the right window size — it ensures rainwater is directed around the window and helps prevent leaks.

Types of VELUX Flashing

VELUX offers different flashing kits to suit different roof coverings:

Flashing Code Roof Covering Profile / Thickness Typical Use
EDW Tiles Up to approx. 120mm profile Standard profiled roof tiles.
EDL Slates Up to approx. 8mm thick Standard non-interlocking slates.
EDP Plain tiles Up to approx. 15mm thick Plain tiles up to ~300mm length.
Other specialist flashings Mixed or special roof types As specified Complex or unusual roof coverings.

How to Choose the Right VELUX Flashing

To select the correct flashing kit, you should consider:

  • Roof material: Tile, slate, plain tile or other covering.
  • Profile depth: How deep the tile profile is and thickness of the slate or tile.
  • Roof pitch: Confirm the pitch is within the window and flashing range.
  • Window size: The flashing code must match the size code of the window (e.g. GGL MK04 + EDW MK04).

For help with size codes, see our VELUX Roof Window Size & Code Guide. To measure roof pitch, see How to Measure Roof Pitch for VELUX Windows.

Roof Pitch and Installation Considerations

Before installing a VELUX roof window, always check:

  • The roof pitch is within the recommended range.
  • The window position allows correct drainage around the flashing.
  • Underfelt, battens and insulation are cut and fitted neatly around the frame.
  • Any insulation collars, vapour barriers and underfelt collars are installed as recommended.

These details help achieve a neat finish and reduce the risk of condensation or cold spots. For more on roof build-ups, see our VELUX Warm Roof vs Cold Roof Guide.

Basic Steps in a VELUX Roof Window Installation

Always follow the official VELUX instructions supplied with the product. As a simple overview, installation typically involves:

  • Setting out and cutting the opening between rafters.
  • Fitting the frame square and level.
  • Installing the flashing kit in the correct bottom-to-top sequence.
  • Refitting the sash and checking operation.
  • Completing internal lining and insulation.

Accessories to Improve Installation

VELUX offers accessories that work alongside flashings to improve performance:

  • Insulation collars: Reduce heat loss around the frame.
  • Vapour control collars: Help manage moisture and condensation risk.
  • Underfelt collars: Ensure a neat, weather-tight connection to the roofing membrane.
